THIERMAY WITH SPANISH BARREL BY LUIS SANTOS. Cal. 58. S# NSN. Daniel Thiermay is known to have been working in Paris between 1700-40. Barrel maker Luis Santos was working in Madrid between 1691-1721. His 13-5/8" barrel with faceted breech section is deeply swamped to round with slight flare to muzzle. A top rib remains. Breech section has some scroll engraving along with four gold poincon; one bearing Santos' name and three depicting a griffin that he was know to use. Flint lock with deeply chamfered slightly arched plate and slight rebate to tail features serpentine cock, inset faceted pan, unbridled friction frizzen and feather spring with trefoil finial. Lock is scroll engraved and "Thiermay" is at bottom center. Trigger has pronounced curl at tip. Dense walnut stock extends to muzzle and is pinned to barrel. Iron mounts include deeply chamfered trigger guard with spear finial, faceted knob grip cap with side spurs and gilded pommel and long solid sideplate. Mounts show geometric borders and some well cut scroll. A vacant crest plate is at top of grip. Stock shows raised mouldings around all elements except grip cap and there are some well cut raised scrolls behind thimble. Walnut ramrod with horn tip mounts through beaded and faceted pipe and matching thimble. CONDITION: good. Metal parts cleaned to silver and gray. Stock remains sound; shows some wear and has been professionally extended from thimble area to muzzle. Bore is good with some scattered pits. Lock is good. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26141/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
