ACTION MILITARY RIFLE FOR THE PEDERSEN DEVICE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1134273. These rifles were manufactured at Springfield Armory starting in late 1918 for the then secret "Pedersen Device" which allowed a soldier to change the bolt action Springfield rifle to a 40 shot semi-auto using a pistol sized cartridge. The end of the war ended the need for the devices and nearly all of them were eventually destroyed in the 1930's. Many if not most of the specially equipped rifles were rebuilt with standard parts. This fine example retains all of its original parts. Bbl. 24" marked behind front sight "SA / flaming bomb / 10-19". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850 yards w/o volley notch. Blade front sight. Receiver has the ejection port on the left side. Receiver ring has the added " MARK I". The swept handle bolt is marked under safety lug "J 5" and has the punch proof under handle. Small gas hole. Extractor has gas hole. Original double pawl trigger. Cutoff is notched to retain the device in rifle. Cutoff pin has screwdriver slot. Walnut stock set. Straight grip stock with grasping grooves and two recoil bolts is marked only with "50" assembly number behind trigger guard. The encircled "P" proof is obscured by a number of small shallow dents. The handguard appears to be a later replacement. All milled furniture including fine checkered trap buttplate. Brown leather model 1907 sling marked 'L-F CO. / 1918 / A.R.S.". UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: nickel plated oiler in butt. CONDITION: original finish stock set has light wear and handling marks notable in the grip area. Metal retains 80% of its original dark Parkerized finish with thinning and light wear. Bore has moderately worn lands with frosted grooves. PROVENANCE: from the collection of Mark Ivey Godfrey. (24-5235/RW). CURIO. $600-900.
