CALF. This lithograph portrait of a Native American best known for his likeness, measuring 9 1/2" x 7 1/2", is on the "Indian Head/Buffalo" nickel. Chief John Two Guns White Calf (1871–1934) was a controversial leader who led the secret Mad Dog Society, which was preserving Blackfoot heritage. He was reviving traditional dances that had been banned, such as the ghost dance. His signature is wonderful, with the drawing of two rifles and a calf. The image was taken by photographer T. J. Hileman in 1927, who is renowned for his Glacier National Park photos, where Chief John Two Guns White Calf made his home. CONDITION: image appears very good on the larger 12 1/2" x 9" board, with the facsimile signature. PROVENANCE: Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection. (02-21428/JS). $300-400.
