SCOPE. Cal. 8X60 Magnum. S# 5934. Ludwig Schiwy was a highly regarded and innovative gunmaker in Berlin and was Herman Goering's favorite. This well appointed rifle has 26" half octagon ribbed barrel fitted with one standing, one folding leaf rear and gold bead front sights. A milled out portion on top of rib is engraved with maker's name and address. Caliber is marked on left side and a claw scope base is at rear. Model 98 Mauser action has been fitted with double set triggers, side saftey and removable floor plate with push button release. Bolt has had handle reshaped to butter knife type. Action and bottom metal are engraved with about 50% coverage well cut scroll. A claw scope base has been fitted to receiver ring. Full length stock of very nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut measures 14" over basket weave horn buttplate. Grip cap is also horn. There are horn spacers at joint of divided forend and forend tip is also horn. Rifle is fitted with spring loaded pop-up cheekpiece and the separate piece of wood that is necessary to make this modification is exceptionally well chosen for continuation of grain and color. Grip and forend checkering are very well done; closely spaced and with mullered borders in point pattern. Rifle is mounted with later Kahles Helia-Super 6X windage adjustable scope with duplex reticle in custom soldered on claw rings (rear with windage). CONDITION: very fine as lightly refinished. Retaining nearly all fine rust blue on barrel and action (left wall has old (probably original) scope mount holes plugged). Stock appears to be very lightly and professionally refinished. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. Scope is very fine; optically clear. (24-4585/MGM). CURIO. $1,750-3,000.
