This seldom seen type of Waffen SS headgear is commonly ascribed to the 13th Handschar (1st Croatian) Waffen SS Division of Croatia. It was also worn by the 23rd Kama Waffen SS Mountain Division. The word "handschar" is a local Bosnian Muslim term for a curved scimitar. This dress fez is made of a red/maroon felt and was intended to be worn with the SS dress uniform. It features a small 1" rolled piece of felt at the crown with a black tassel attached. The front features a black and white bevo Death's Head skull with SS eagle above. The interior has a 1 1/4" tan leather sweatband embossed “Carlartz”.
CONDITION: the body of the fez is solid with no visible moth damage. Insignia are bold and show only light wear. Sweatband is complete but partially detached. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18256/BF). $1,000-1,300.
