OFFICER’S SWORD TO LT. JACOB WEST 3RD VIRGINIA RESERVES. 29.75" Blade etched with patriotic motifs including First National flag, cross cannons in a panoply of arms, and “CSA”. Classic Boyle & Gamble tobacco leaf decorated pommel, single brass wire wrapped leather grip. Scabbard is classic top stitched B&G with plain brass pinned mounts. The throat is inscribed “J. A. WEST / 1ST LIEUT / CO. C 3RD REG / VA R”. Jacob A West is found in the Virginia rosters as 1st Lieut. Company C, 3rd Virginia Reserves (Buckingham Reserves), Booker’s Regiment, Walker’s Brigade. Jacob was promoted to 1st lieutenant November 7, 1864. He signed an oath of allegiance at Farmville, VA April 28, 1865. His sword is well preserved, complete, original with fine patina. CONDITION: very good overall, superior condition for a Confederate sword. Blade is mostly bright with most of its light etching discernible. Leather grip is complete with scuffing and complete wire wrap. Hilt, pommel, and scabbard mounts have matching uncleaned medium mustard patinas. Leather scabbard body is sound, solid and complete, drag is slightly loose and missing one pin. (02-14819/JS). $8,000-12,000.
