Cal. 44. NSN. 55" overall, 40" full octagonal barrel signed in script "J+L". Overall length 51". Joe Long (1799-1872) was born in 1799 in what is now Snyder County, PA. About 1820 his family moved to White Deer township, Union County, PA. He is listed as a gun smith in the 1826 tax list in Snyder County, approx. 1832 he relocated to Beaver Springs, where he worked until at least the 1840's. Joe Long died in 1872. Joe Long was a prolific maker, living and working longer than most of his contemporaries. Unusual features are often found on his guns such as the elegant eagle engraved on the lock escutcheon. Large finely engraved 4 piece patch box with pierced finial, engraved brass top plate, heel plate, cheek piece plate, and wear plate. 8 engraved silver figural keyway escutcheons, 21 additional engraved silver insets including a Masonic square & compass engraved thumb plate. Beautifully striped Maple stock has incised carving including large scrolls rear of cheek piece. A mystery item is found in patch box of the gun, a Victorian bracelet with large sterling Old English "S" attached, is hallmarked Birmingham England 1851. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, appears complete and original with exception of new lock components when reconverted back from percussion to flint. All insets appear original & complete, stock sound with expected burnout at beech. Mechanics need attention to set double triggers, good rifled bore. (01-27189/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
