GEORGE CHANDLER, 88TH ILLINOIS, KILLED AT KENNESAW MOUNTAIN, GEORGIA. 35" finely etched Henry Sauerbier, Newark, NJ blade, characteristic heavy Sauerbier engraved branched hilt, cocked pommel with spanner nut, engraved brass mounts. Top ring mount finely inscribed in 9-line presentation on reverse side: "Presented to LIEUT. COL. GEO W. CHANDLER" by the Line Officers of his Regiment (88th Ill Vol. Inf.) after the Battle of Stones River upon being appointed to command "Rosecrans Brigade of Honor". George Warner Chandler (1832-1864) born in Canada, enlisted from Chicago September 1862 as major in 88th, had 2 horses killed at Stones River, heavily engaged at Chickamauga & Missionary Ridge and through out the Atlanta campaign. Chandler died from wounds received at the "Dead Angle" on Cheatham Hill during battle of Kennesaw Mountain, June 27, 1864. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of research materials. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, lots of original luster on blade, dark staining especially one side. Hilt retains much of its original gold wash, traces of gold on scabbard mounts, steel scabbard body is fine with one dent, complete grip, grip slightly misfit at throat. (02-19260/JS). $3,000-4,000.
