COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA MUSKET BY JOHN MILES. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbls. 43 7/8", w/ lg. bayonet lug at top near muzzle is stamped "CP" at breech end along w/ deep "P" & liberty cap proof (pre 1799). Left rear of bbl. is also engraved "97. R. 1. Co. No. 22.". Lock w/ integral pan has flat beveled plate w/ sm. teat finial and is stamped "MILES" vertically over "CP" at rear. Flat faced chamferred cock is reinforced. Frizzen is bridled & feather spring has bulbous finial. American walnut stock of Charleville style has deeply fluted comb & is iron mounted. Bbl. is secured by 3 spring retained bands. Center band is marked "C2". All other furniture is unmarked. Both sling loops are present and what appears to be original ramrod has cone shaped head. Right side of comb is very nicely carved w/ the initials "J.W.D". CONDITION: very good to fine. All metal parts w/ undisturbed smooth brown patina w/ some remaining silver highlights. There is pitting around touch hole. Lock is in original flint configuration. Stock has wonderful hand worn patina at normal carry areas & surfaces retain what appears to be most of their original finish. Stock is sound, lock fits exceptionally well. A large sliver is missing between front and mid band on left side of bbl. channel. Lock is operable. A very appealing Commonwealth of Pennsylvania musket.
