6 3/4" Overall. 4" Dbl. edged blade. 3" Ebony grip numbered “18” w/ matching number “18” stamped in leather body of German silver mounted sheath. This unknown maker has always been thought by most knife collectors to be New Orleans, but consignor is convinced these were made in Memphis as this particular pattern is found more often in that vicinity w/ distinctive blade w/ median ridge & hollow ground cutting edges. This may be the finest example known & has been in his collection for over 50 years. CONDITION: fine overall. Blade is gray/bright w/ smooth iron patina to exposed shaft. Cutting edge has several nicks w/ areas of staining & pitting. Accompanying matching sheath retains virtually all original dyed surface w/ crisp matching number on leather & top of wood handle. PROVENANCE: Collection of John Montague. (02-16497/JS). $3,000-5,000.
