REVOLVER MADE FOR PHILIP G. BARTHROPP, ENGLISH ADVENTURER, CIVIL WAR & FENIAN REBELLION SOLDIER, & SPORTSMAN. Cal. 32. S# NSN. Bbl. 4". George Webb is obscure Oxford, England gunmaker who sold his custom made guns to the wealthy elite. He worked at 19 High Street, Oxford 1862-1869. Inscribed on plaques on lid of case are Barthropp coat of arms "wings pierced by arrow" & "P.G. BARTHROPP"
9" overall, solid silverplated brass frame, blued tapered octagonal barrel with British proofs, no maker marks other than "G*W" & "0" on grip frame. Silver plated heavy solid German silver frame, shrouded spur trigger, unique design spring loaded hand on top strap that holds cylinder when cocked, ebony grips, sparse scroll engraved. Mahogany casing, with blue baize lined compartments, large paper label inside lid: "GEO WEBB / Gun, Rifle, and Pistol Maker / No. 19 / High Street / Oxford". Case retains steel cleaning rod, added pack of Winchester cartridges with illustrated label.
Philip G. Barthropp (1844-1912) educated at "École spéciale militaire" an elite French military school & still in operation today. According to his biography he came to America and fought under Sherman for 6 months and later took part in quelling the Fenian Rebellion in Canada. He went on to the West Indies to manage family’s sugar plantation where in his spare time was horse training. When back in England he was involved in horse racing, and hunting from horseback, fox hunts he was master of the hunts for most of his life. He worked as stockbroker in London till death in 1912 always involved with horses. UNATTACCHED UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: large file of research materials and original 1892 engraving of Barthropp. CONDITION: fine overall, retaining much original silver & blue finish, mechanic fine, crisp rifled bore. Casing fine overall, cartridge pack label scuffed but complete, functioning key. (01-22887/JS). $3,000-5,000.
