BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 416 Van Horn. S# 1. The 416 Van Horn appears to be the 460 Weatherby magnum shortened and necked down. Walter Abe was a very well-known custom rifle maker who originally worked for Roy Weatherby in the 50's & 60's. This well made rifle has 24" medium weight barrel fitted with custom elevation and windage adjustable express rear sight set into a custom island base. Gold bead front sight is in Williams ramp. Muzzle is ported, a sling eye is soldered to bottom, top of barrel is engraved "WALTER ABE - RIFLEMAKER - L.A. CALIF. - 1977". Caliber is engraved on left rear. Mauser model 98 standard length action by DWM appears to be sourced from a model 1909 Argentine rifle. Left side of receiver ring is engraved "NO. 1". Bolt stop has been altered with finger piece checkered, bolt has been lowered for scope use, bolt shroud is case hardened and fitted with Buehler safety. Scope bases are fitted, a commercial trigger is installed, bottom metal has been nicely reshaped and polished. Pistol grip stock of attractively marbled thin shell walnut is finished in a style seen on other rifles by Abe and measures 13 5/8" over "Old English" pad and features swept shadow line right hand cheek piece, rosewood forend tip and grip cap, two case hardened recoil bolts and sling eye on toeline. Borderless point pattern checkering at grip and around forend is very well done. CONDITION: very fine, retaining over 90% custom finishes on wood and metal, wood showing a fair number of scratches and marks. Bore is bright and shiny, mechanically smooth. A very nicely appointed rifle. (22-5795/MGM). MODERN. $1,500-3,000.
