SCHNEIDER. Cal. 16 Ga. 2-9/16"/8x57JR. S# 5318. The 25-1/2" barrels are engraved with maker's name and address ("Zella Mehlis") on matted rib. Rib is fitted with claw scope bases, pop-up "U" notch rear and silver bead front sights. Barrel flats are stamped with August 1939 German nitro proofs. Coin finished scallop backed boxlock action features rifle selector on top tang rifle cocking indicator on top of action, Greener type saftey, cross bolt third fastener, bushed shotgun strikers, sideclips, intercepting safety sears, arrowhead tumbler end shotgun cocking indicators and double triggers (front set). Action is engraved with near full coverage exceptionally well detailed oak leaves and acorns in well shaded background. This fine works surrounds game scenes on sides with ducks and robuck on left and two pair of stags and hinds on right. Trigger guard is horn. Very finely marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13-3/4" over checkered horn buttplate. Stock features point pattern grip checkering, shadowline right hand cheekpiece and sling loop on toeline. A cartridge trap is installed at rear of toeline; its cover is semi-relief engraved with calling auerhahn perched on branch while two females are on ground. Coin finish of action shows light cleaning; engraving remains sharp and clear. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish, with many light marks. Checkering is moderately worn.
