BY C. HOFFACKER. Cal. 16 Bore/9.3x72R ?. S# 1562. The 27-1/2" barrel set is gold inlaid "Chr. Hoffacker, Munchen" in milled out portion of matted full length rib. A flip-over rear sight and silver bead front are installed. There are gold bands around breech ends with associated floral triangles. Krupp steel eagle logos are also present. Barrel flats are stamped with Imperial German nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Coin finished under lever action is fitted with front spring locks with rebounding hammers. Top lever selects rifle barrel. Top tang is fitted with flip-up rear sight. Action is near fully engraved with very nicely cut and shaded Germanic acanthus scroll. Lockplates have more of this scroll surrounding hammers but also have high relief game animals engraved front and rear. A running rabbit is at front of left lock with crouched fox at rear. Right lock depicts running hind at front and standing boar at rear. This engraving theme continues to cartridge trap in butt where scroll surrounds portrait of a large standing stag. Round knob pistol grip buttstock of burl figured European walnut features Bavarian style cheekpiece and horn buttplate. Grip checkering is enhanced by superb high relief acanthus and floral carvings. Left side of buttstock behind cheekpiece is relief carved with hunting scene of two hounds standing over a fallen roebuck with jaeger approaching in background. Matching splinter forend has Deeley release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .669. R .668. Restriction: L .026 (mod). R .026 (mod). Wall thickness: L .030. R .030. STOCK: DAH: 2-15/16". DAC: 1-7/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 13-1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 6 oz. CONDITION: good "as found". Barrels retaining most of their original blue with considerable hand wear from normal handling. Action and locks show light cleaning to silver gray. Engraving remains clear. Stock retains old oil finish possibly original with lots of hand wear on carving to a mellow patina. Shotgun bores are very good with light pitting in right barrel. Rifle bore is good toward muzzle; pitted at breech end. Action is tight. Locks are good. Set trigger works.
