ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 7.62x54R. S# S8294. S# matches on receiver, bbl., and bolt. Bbl. 31 1/2". Import mark on the left side of the bbl. This interesting rifle is referred to as the "Lotta" rifle. Part of the financing of these rifles was provided by the Civil Guards female auxiliary, the Lotta-Svard, hence the nickname. The bbl. of this rifle is stamped on the top over the chamber with the "S" civil guard crest with the three evergreen sprigs. These bbls. utilized Bohler-Stahl steel. This later production bbl. is the so-called step bbl., as the end was reduced in diameter to accept a bayonet. The bbl. is marked on the right side with two "star bursts" repair markings. The receiver retains traces of the imperial eagle, and the original civil guard number was lined out after 1944, when the guard was disbanded and the rifles were turned over to the Finnish Army. The bolt with its straight handle has a lined-out earlier S#. Interestingly, this rifle does not have the boxed "SA" property mark. Konovalov rear sight re-graduated to meters. Sight base is marked "M". The front sight blade is tall, "Finnish type without step". Hardwood stock step. Buttstock is Finnish mfg., utilizing the 2-piece construction in the toe area. Stock is not finger-jointed. Recoil bolt aligns with grasping grooves. Early style handguard with brass rivets retained by two clamping bbl. bands. Bands are retained by small screws to allow them to be left slightly loose. Cleaning rod is present. Sling slots are equipped with stirrup-type swivels. The screw on the right front escutcheon is not present. CONDITION: stock set has seen considerable service with the expected wear, staining, and handling marks. Circularly repaired knot on the right side of the butt. Notable gouges and abrasions in the comb and buttplate areas. A 2" crack ahead of the buttplate tang, a 1" crack behind the receiver tang, and a 1" crack ahead of the trigger guard. Metal retains 50% of its original blue finish, turning gray with wear and spots of light oxidation. Bore has strong lands but is turning dark in grooves. PROVENANCE: from the lifelong collection of Terrence McCarty. (24-341/RW). CURIO. $200-400.
