ARMY FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER REVOLVER. Cal. 44-40. S# 64064. Bbl. 7 1/2". Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter revolver mfg. by Colt in 1881. Left side of the bbl. exhibits a faint "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" etched panel, with Colt's single line address marked across the top, and a diminutive "44" marked on the underside towards the breech. Left side of the frame is marked "PAT.SEPT.19.1871./ JULY.2.-72./ JAN.19.-75.", with "44.C.F." marked on the left side of the forward trigger guard web. Black powder frame, hammer, and loading gates original finish was case colored. Bbl., ejector rod housing, trigger guard, and rear grip strap exhibit a blue finish. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece smooth walnut grip. Standard SAA pattern blade front sight with frame notched rear sight. Oval type ejector rod head. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, cyl., trigger guard, and rear grip strap. CONDITION: frame retains scant traces of its original case colored finish, having faded to a mottled gray patina and exhibiting light to mild pitting, as well as some superficial handling marks. Hammer retains fair amounts of faded case coloring. Blue parts retain trace to fair amounts of their original blue finish, with the balance fading to gray and brown patinas. Front sight and bbl. around muzzle shows consistent moderate pitting. Action functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Bore exhibits consistent dark moderate pitting, while retaining worn but clearly visible rifling throughout. Grip shows scattered handling marks and impressions, with moderate flaking present to its added varnish finish. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (01-27621/MLW).
