FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER SAA REVOLVER. Cal. 44-40. S# 46559. Bbl. 7 1/2" with Hartford address and blade front sight. First year of production in this caliber, etched panel markings are incredibly delicate and were discontinued after only 12 years(1890) in favor of a much more sturdy roll die marking. Finding an example this early with the panel still visible to any degree would prove very difficult for collectors. Left side has etched panel "FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" marking. 6-shot fluted cyl. Black powder frame. Bullseye ejector head. Bbl., frame, grip straps, and cyl. have matching #s. Butt of gun has hand scratched initial "W". 1-piece walnut grip. Mfg. in 1878. CONDITION: metal finish has faded to gray showing scattered light pitting. Etched panel cal. marking is weakly visible as are patent markings on the frame. Some action screws are replacements. Sanded and refinished grips show wear and handling marks. Action is in time. Generally bright bore retaining well defined rifling throughout. (01-27255/DS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
