LONG RIFLE. Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 36" octagon. Top flat has partially legible marking “F. BEERSTRECHER/LEWISBURG, UNION CTY, PA”. Engraved trade lock marked “G. Goulcher”. Double set triggers. Pin fastened full length cheek piece maple stock. Oval lid patchbox. Brass fittings include crescent buttplate, toe plate, finger curl trigger guard, side plate escutcheon & nose cap. Artificially striped hardwood ramrod is held by a plain brass thimble & 2 pipes. American Gunsmith by Frank Sellers has the following listing: “BEERSTRECHER, FREDERICK, (1812-1890). Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1848-1856d, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, 1857-1868, Centreville, Michigan, 1868-1879d. San Francisco, California, 1879-1890. Patent # 13,592, September 28, 1855, superposed loads. Derringers and rifles both with and without patent mechanism. Percussion 4 shot rifle. (Winant, Shelton)”. CONDITION: bbl. has dark patina appearance w/ pitting having an area of cleaning near markings. Lock has dark pitted appearance. Wood has added finish over wear & handling marks. Functioning lock.
