Cal. 8mm Lebel. S# A41668. S#s match on barrel, bolt, bolt head and triggerguard. Bbl. 17 3/4". Model 1920A ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Model 1920A front sight. Both sights marked with "A". Receiver marked on left rail in script "Ets. Continsouza", "MLE 1907-15". Receiver marked on top with "N" as virtually all French rifles and carbines had their chambers lengthened to use this ammunition in emergencies. Barrel is marked over chamber on right side with "MA C 1920". Barrel marked on left side over chamber with "GG" and encircled "J" and encircled "C" inspectors' marks. Rifle is equipped with handguard ring but no handguard is present. Turn down bolt handle with smooth knob. Bolt takedown screw has large head. 5 round magazine. Walnut stock with grasping grooves. Upper and lower barrel bands have rounded milled profile similar to U.S. style and marked on right side "U". Bands are retained by springs. Lower band has bottom swivel. Upper band has no provision for cleaning rod but is a very loose fit allowing rod's insertion into forend. Upper band has bayonet stud but has no provision for stacking bar. Steel cleaning rod measures 15 1/2" with flattened slotted tip. Buttstock has sling bar on left side. Smooth steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 15 5/8" fullered blade. First pattern Model 1902 bayonet marked on right ricasso with faint encircled acceptance marks. Blade is marked on top in script "Md Armde Chat Tullie 1893". Blade has notches to engage retainer in scabbard. Composition grips fastened by 2 rivets. Curved quillon. Muzzle ring with notch for front sight. Blued steel scabbard. Bright blade turning gray with spots of light oxidation. Balance of metal gray and patina. Grips have notable cracks around rivets. Scabbard turning overall gray and patina with notable dent. 2 metal enbloc clips: one 3 round and one 5 round. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear, staining and handling marks with added finish. Metal has original black enamel finish with wear and scratches. Barrel bands are blue. Good shiny bore with lightly worn lands. PROVANANCE: from The Collection of Curtis H Halvorson. (23-5956/RW).
