MILITARY SINGLE-SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 11mm Chasspot Combustible. S# P74777. Bbl. 32 1/2". Ladder rear sight graduated to 1300 yards. Stud type front sight. The Model 1866 is a needle fire single shot rifle using either a paper or cloth cartridge w/ an internal priming pellet. Straight bolt handle. Rifle is cocked by a roller equipped thumbpiece. Receiver marked on top left flat in script w/ “ST. ENTIENNE” & “MLE 1866”. Cleaning rod & bayonet bar are present. Walnut stock is fastened by 2 bands & marked on right side of butt w/ roundel which has “MAI.”, “B.S.”, “J.” & “MA” in center. Stock has acceptance marks near roundel & at top & bottom of grip. Marked on left side of butt w/ prominent S#. CONDITON: stock has nice original finish w/ crisp markings. Stock has light wear & scattered handling marks. Several notable small gouges on right side of butt. Metal is overall gray & light patina w/ a lightly cleaned appearance & light overall wear. Sharp needle is present in bolt. Rubber obdurating rings are not present in bolt. Bore is shiny w/ strong sharp lands. (01-22728/RW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,100.
