J. STAPLETON. Cal. 42. NSN. 41" swamped octagon bbl. is fitted w/ sm. U-notch rear & brass blade front sights. Top flat stamped "J. Stapleton" (most likely James of Todd, Pennsylvania working 1838-1890). Rifle fitted w/ trade percussion lock. Dbl. triggers are fitted. Stock of highly figured tiger maple extends to muzzle w/ 2" brass cap & is pinned to bbl. Rifle is brass mounted w/ grip spur on faceted trigger guard, crescent buttplate w/ 8" return, rectangular patchbox w/ multipierced sideplates & pierced scrolling finial also has some border engraving. Stock is also inlaid w/ a lg. number of geometric & scrolling German silver pieces. Lozenges & commas are at grip. An 8 pointed star is on sm. shadowline cheekpiece & other fancy inlays are along bbl. channel. Ramrod channel is nicely beaded & hickory ramrod mounts through 2 octagonal & beaded pipes w/ matching thumb piece. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 4 inlays. CONDITION: fair. Iron parts w/ dark brown patina except lock which is almost cleaned to bright w/ some pitting. Brass of trigger guard nicely toned, other brass shows cleaning. A screw is missing at bottom of buttplate & it is loose. Patchbox latch also missing. Stock shows breaks & losses along bbl. channel w/ 4 inlays removed & in plastic bag accompanying rifle. Forend is broken through & shows glue repair 24" from muzzle. It appears there are some losses to wood channel on both sides. Bore is shiny, about fine. Lock is operable.
