SIGNED "JL". Cal. 40 smooth bore. NSN. 36" octagon bbl. fitted w/ U-notch rear & steel blade front sights engraved "J*L" on top flat (consignor notes indicate this is James Long working 1825-87 in Beaver Springs, PA.). Trade percussion lock is unmarked. Rifle fitted w/ dbl. set triggers. Maple stock w/ some curly grain extends to muzzle w/ 1 1/2" brass cap & is pinned to bbl. Rifle is brass mounted. Faceted trigger guard has finger spurs, rear forming grip. Crescent buttplate w/ 3" return has patchbox latch in curve. Simple rectangular patchbox w/ simple sideplates has pierced steeple type finial. Patchbox has some finely cut border & starburst engraving. Brass sideplate is inverted heart shape & left side of stock has fluted sm. cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod is held by 2 simple beaded pipes & no tailpipe. CONDITION: very good. Iron parts dark brown patina, lock considerably rusted. Brass w/ dark almost black patina on trigger guard & dark brown elsewhere. Stock w/ most of its old possibly original finish has hand worn highlights at balance point & at grip. There are pieces of wood missing from bottom of lockplate & a couple of cracks along bbl. channel. Bore is pitted. Lock & triggers are operable. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing.
