JAME STAPLETON. Cal. 37. NSN. 34 1/4" octagon bbl. is fitted w/ lg. ghost ring rear & brass blade front sights. Top flat marked "J. Stapleton" w/in engraved parallelogram (consignor's notes indicate rifle is by "Jame" Stapleton 1833-1900 of Beavertown, PA. in Snyder county). Trade lock is unmarked except for engraving on flat faced hammer. Dbl. triggers are fitted. Front trigger nicely turned. Full stock of curly maple extends to muzzle w/ 1 1/2" cap & is pinned to bbl. Rifle is brass mounted w/ finger spur on thin trigger guard forming grip. Attenuated crescent buttplate has 4" return & an oval patchbox in shaped housing is on right side of stock. Left side has distinctive long cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod is held in 2 beaded pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: good. Bbl. retaining over 90% brown patina w/ cleaned highlights, especially around name. Lock w/ cleaning to gray brown. Stock w/ hand worn patina in what is possibly original finish. Brass nicely toned. Bore is pitted throughout. Rifling evident. Triggers & lock functional but stiff. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19597/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
