FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. .40. NSN. 56.5” overall, 40.5” octagon barrel signed “S * M” with fixed sights This rifle is consistent with Samuel Miller of Hamburg, Pennsylvania circa 1830. 4-piece lightly engraved 7-piercings patchbox, 17 silver inlays, incised carved scrolls on stock on both sides of cheek piece, well fit curly maple stock, double set triggers, brass furniture. Cheekpiece has inset brass plate for vent pick, like many North Carolina rifles. Owner contacted NC rifle authority Bill Ivey who responded saying it was his opinion Miller of Berks County, PA.
CONDITION: very good overall, “as found” dark patina to barrel, furniture, inlays, and hand worn patina to stock. Reconversion battery is poor on original “LONDON WARRENTED” lock plate. Small inset of wood forward of lock, single silver inlay replaced left side at nosecap. Mechanics need attention, crisp riled bore. (01-21545/JS). $2,000-3,000
