SIDE STEYR MP-40 SUBMACHINE GUN WITH SOMERSET COUNTY MAINE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT TRANSIT CASE. Cal. 9mm. S# 1416. Bbl. 10". MP-40 submachine gun mfg. during World War II by Steyr. Left side of the receiver is marked with Steyr's "bnz" code, above the S# and Steyr Eagle/WaA623 acceptance proofs. Right side of the receiver is electro-penciled "SOMERSET COUNTY/ SHERIFF'S DEPT.". Lower assembly is marked "MP40/ 660/ 40", and is fitted with black bakelite furniture. Standard hooded blade front sight, with square notch rear sight. Slab side mag. housing. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, rear sight assembly, bbl. nut, bbl., alloy resting bar, front sight hood, as well as on the bolt. Firing pin / telescoping recoil mainspring assembly, and lower assembly are mismatched. Mag. is absent. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: wood transit case, with a Maine Somerset County Sheriff's Department insignia on the lid. CONDITION: good, with metal components retaining much of their original blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that shows through to gray and brown patinas. Shoulder rest on stock exhibits pitting and some grind marks from prior cleaning. Bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining good to strong rifling throughout. Bakelite furniture shows scattered marks and nicks, as well as a couple of chips from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. Left grip panel exhibits a gouge that does not affect serviceability. Transit case shows scattered marks from handling and storage, as well as a few losses to the sheriff's insignia, but otherwise is good. A nice example of a desirable early slab side Steyr MP-40.
