MG08/15 MACHINE GUN. CURIO. Cal. 7.92 Mauser. S# 4357. Bbl. 28". 1917 German Erfurt Maxim 08/15 transferable water-cooled MG. Manufactured as a more portable variant of the famous Maschinengewehr 08, or MG08, Germany's standard machine gun in World War I. Both are direct evolutions of Sir Hiram Maxim's original 1884 Maxim gun. The MG08-15 utilizes a shoulder stock and forward mounted pistol grip & trigger for firing prone from a bipod. While retaining a similar water jacket, fusee cover and knuckle-buster charging system to Sir Hiram Maxim's original design, it has a much smaller receiver signature and is intended to be fired in a similar fashion to a traditional rifle, without the necessity of a heavy mount. This example was originally manufactured by Erfert in 1917. BATFE paperwork states the manufacturer as "Erfurt WWI Germany". Much of it still retains matching numbers including the top cover, left sideplate, & external charging mechanism. Easily serviced and upgraded parts at the armory level have been changed and display different numbers, such as the bolt, bearing #2751 and the fusee cover, bearing #5603, which is common. Finish on the receiver is blued, matching the top cover as well. Markings are clear and strong throughout. Blade front sight. Rear sight graduated from 400 meters to 2000 meters. The water jacket has been painted green whole the muzzle booster retains is original bluing. Hardwood shoulder stock and checkered pistol grip. Bipod is also painted an older shade of green. MAGS: 1 WWI era Cloth belt w/ brass tabs. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1 Drum hanger, water hose. CONDITION: Blued finish on receiver enjoys fairly full coverage with areas of thinning, w/ some areas turned typical brown in areas. Fussee cover finish has spots thinned back to the original metal. All possess clear, legible original stampings in several areas. Top cover has additional number on top "37". Water jacket & bipod each possess their own shade of paint, & while the water jacket is complete, obviously painted most recently, it demonstrates some light dings. Wooden shoulder stock has several typical impressions and a few light cracks, though nothing appears to have affected the structural integrity. Pistol grip is checkered with only a few impressions. Drum hanger has broken & needs to be rewelded to be functional. Bore is quite bright but still retains strong rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Brian Linde. (03-1808/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $9,000-$14,000
