7.5" x 10" framed vellum discharge of Thomas Lally who finished 5 years service in the West during height of Indian Wars. Discharge dated July 6, 1875, Fort A. Lincoln, Dakota Territory. If Lally had reupped for another year, he could have been killed at Battle of Little Big Horn June 25, 1876. Lally's captain also signs document with inked comment on Lally's character; "a good soldier and honest man". Captain Thomas B. Weir was with Reno's command on that eventful June 25th and survived the battle and was the only officer in Reno's command to try to find Custer. Weir Point on the Custer battlefield is named for him. He blamed Reno for Custer's death and promised Libby Custer to tell her the "true story" in face-to-face meeting. He died before that meeting December 9, 1876 at 38. CONDITION: appears good overall, not removed from frame. Text is nicely highlighted and shadowed in brown & red ink other than signatures and Weir's comments. Text all discernible though "G A Custer" signature is light. (02-19861/JS). $2,000-3,000.
