ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 256 Gibbs Magnum. S# 2987A. Gibbs # B5363 (on trigger guard bow). # B4820 (on barrel). George Gibbs made a fair number of these rifles at the turn of the century and they were quite popular as a general purpose rifle in Africa and few are found in fine condition. This example exhibiting most of its original finish has 26" barrel fitted with express and two leaf rear and silver bead front sights, both in raised blocks. British proofs are at rear along with "FOR" "GIBBS" ".256" "MAGNUM" "CARTRIDGE" "ONLY" (The 256 Gibbs had a larger case than the standard M.S. cartridge with ballistics similar to the 6.5 x 55 Swedish). Mannlicher Schoenaur action is marked "MODELL" "1903" on receiver ring and "STEYR 1906" on sidewall. Bolt has turned down handle with large hollow knob. Gibbs #B5363 is on bolt root. Stock with round knob pistol grip is of lightly figured European walnut and measures 14-5/16" over steel buttplate. Well cut checkering is present at grip and around forend. A sling eye is on toeline. CONDITION: fine. Metal parts retaining over 80% original blue. Wood retains most of its original finish. About 9" of the butt appears to have been submerged in wet environment. Wood has darkened, buttplate and sling eye are rusted. Bore is very fine; shiny throughout. Mechanically fine. A classic British rifle. (24-4146/MGM). CURIO. $1,200-2,500.
