KRIEGOFF. Cal. 16x16 (2-9/16" actual measure) /9.3x72R. S# 7179. This very high quality attractive drilling has 26-1/2" barrel set with flat matted full length rib fitted with pop-up rear and silver bead front sights along with claw scope bases. "Sempert & Kriegoff, Suhl" is gold inlaid on unmatted portion of rib. Wittener Steel information is on both barrels and gold bands are around breech ends. Barrel flats are stamped with pre-WWI German nitro proofs for 16 Ga. and 9.3/72 rifle cartridge. Shotgun flats are also stamped 2-3/4". Case hardened top lever sidelock action with rifle cocking lever on left side and pivoting safety ("Sicher" in gold) on left lock features hidden cross bolt third fastener, filed arrowhead tumbler end cocking indicators, side clips and double triggers (front set). Action is engraved with about 40% coverage of sprays of well cut scroll along with some geometric borders. Fences are very finely semi-relief carved with acanthus leaves with beaded separations. Lockplates are engraved with more scroll and fairly unusual scrolled gold wire surrounds for well done game scenes. Left lockplate has scene of roebuck defending itself from a small yappy dog; right lock has portrait of roaring stag with hind on hilltop. Trigger guard bow has more scroll and gold wire inlay surrounding gold monogram "CS". Trigger guard tang is covered in horn. Horn capped pistol grip buttstock made from a fine piece of dark, crotch figured European walnut, which is nicely streaked, measures 14-1/2" over ribbed horn buttplate and features hog back comb, shadow line right hand cheekpiece, sling loop and a cartridge trap on toeline with push button release. Trap cover is engraved with more scroll and wire inlay surrounding scene of two pigeons. Sides of buttstock have been relief carved, probably after original manufacture, with roaring stag on right and roebuck on left. Matching splinter forend with Deeley release has carved stag skull surmounted by a bone cross. This later carving is rather well done. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .667. R .665. Restriction: L .029 (full). R .023 (mod). Wall thickness: L .025. R .032. STOCK: DAH: 3-3/16". DAC: 1-9/16". 2" rear of the hog back. CAST: about 1/4" off. LOP: 14-1/2". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 5 oz. CONDITION: very good. Barrels retaining most of what appears to be their original blue with considerable high edge wear and browning at normal carry points. Action retains a good quantity of original light case hardening color with some scattered freckling. Stocks show considerable wear to their original finish with many light marks and dings. Checkering is considerably worn; quite smooth at grip and rubbed away at portions of forend. Shotgun bores are fine to very fine; mostly shiny with one or two very minor pits and one or two minor pings in left barrel. Rifle bore is quite good, shiny with sharp rifling throughout. Action is tight; barrels on face. Mechanically fine. Sempert & Kriegoff are generally regarded as one of Germany's finest pre-war makers. Gold inlay is seldom seen on pre-war German guns.
