This visually interesting item is actually called a hay harpoon or spear. It would be thrust into a large haybale, and the two anchoring hooks would be deployed. Then a rope and pulley system would be used to hoist the bale to the hayloft in the top of a barn. The harpoon is cast iron and appears to be complete and functional. It was well suited for use with many long-stemmed grasses such as Timothy. CONDITION: The harpoon has an oxidized finish throughout, likely from years of hanging in an early barn. (02-23779/BF). $150-300.
