CREST WITH SPANNER. Cal. 54. S# NSN. The 37-3/4" swamped barrel has octagonal breech and muzzle sections. Central portion is round, and at breech end transitions through simple band. Rear sight is a simple standing leaf; front a brass bead. Rear of barrel is stamped with a "W". Barrel attaches to stock with bone pins through floral engraved bone escutcheons. Wheel lock with nicely filed dog and spring has central brass boss to protect wheel, spring loaded pan cover and brass release detent in the form of a winged cherub. Plate is otherwise plain. Stock extends to muzzle with bone tip, appears to be fruitwood and is remarkable as the overall decoration is in the form of a multitude of raised crescent moons giving a fish scale effect. This treatment extends half way through cheekpiece and along top right chamfer of butt. Stock is decorated with bone accents and outlines which are nicely scrimmed with motifs of scrolls and foliage. The portrait of a lady is on cheekpiece. Buttplate of bone has family crest of shield device at center with arrow and stars. The initials "HP" are at top of crest. A spectacular bone patchbox cover on right side of stock is decorated with a scrimmed coiled dragon. Trigger guard is steel with finger grooves. A walnut ramrod mounts through bone front pipe. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: spanner which does fit axle of wheel. CONDITION: very good. Steel and iron parts are cleaned to silver gray. Brass is also cleaned and fairly bright. Stock is very fine with lots of old finish; possibly original. Fishtail carving shows considerable wear at normal carry points. Stock also shows worm damage; mostly on butt. Bone inlays are good. Bore is good to very good; fairly shiny. Lock appears to be good; however it does not cock. Two bone barrel attaching pins are missing. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27572/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
