J N HUND (?). Cal. 50. S# NSN. The 30-1/2" swamped octagon barrel is fitted with nicely filed two leaf rear and silver bead front sights. A barrel maker's poincon on top flat shows two letters that look like a "P" and a "K" over a running stag. Capital "Z" is on barrel tang. Intricately filled lock with pivoting gate for pan is engraved with well cut large scroll, which surrounds a scene of two jaegers conversing in open ground at the side of a mountain with chamois escaping in background. Foreground in signed J N Hund (?). Full stock of fancy European walnut extends to muzzle with steel cap and is pinned to barrel. Stock is decorated with some bone inlay along with mother-of-pearl, tendrils of inlaid bone in the form of scrolls offset larger inlays. Furniture is brass. Trigger guard with finger grooves has engraved foliate finials. A large sideplate has some scroll engraving. Walnut ramrod with horn tip is held by two faceted brass pipes and matching thimble. Right side has sliding wooden patchbox cover. CONDITION: good. Iron and steel parts cleaned to silver gray. Engraving remains clear. Stock has old oil finish; possibly original. There is an inlay missing at top of heal; patchbox cover has replaced wooden tip which does not match horn of buttplate. Bore is good with strong rifling. Lock appears complete; inletting for lock in stock is rather fresh. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27571/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
