Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 45626. Standard configuration with 30" bbl. fitted with tangent curve rear sight and blade front. Handguard is of later style which covers receiver ring. Action is marked “MODEL 1896”. Walnut stock with rounded butt having trap has holes for cleaning rod and oiler. Inspector’s mark “JSA 1896” is on left side and a faint circled “P” is on grip. Rack number "51" is stenciled on left side of butt. CONDITION: very fine. Metal parts retaining about 80-85% original finish. Bright blue on extractor has considerable light pitting. Stock retains nearly all of its original oil finish with a few light marks. Inspector’s stamp is strong. Bore is bright and shiny, mechanically good. A Rock Island Arsenal 1903 dated sling is present which is fair to good condition with vertegris. Consignor’s tag says “rifle is documented to Spanish American soldier, see Springfield research letter” (not found). (01-21831/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
