PISTOLS BY DURS EGG. Cal. 58 (pr.). S# NSN (pr.). Swiss born Durs Egg emigrated to England in the 1760's and worked for Henry Nock. He had formed his own business by 1772, was completely blind by 1822 and died in 1831. He was one of the most famous gunmakers of his day. These pistols were probably made in his early years at about the time of the American Revolution. They have 8" browned barrels which are octagonal at rear and transform through a wedding band to round with slightly flared muzzles. Top flats are engraved "D. EGG - LONDON" and London proofs are on top left flats. Barrels are not fitted with patent breeches. Tangs are engraved with spears, clubs and sheilds. Locks with slightly arched beveled plates and rebated tails are fitted with serpentine cocks, back sliding safetys, integral rounded pans, bridled friction frizzens and feather springs with spear finials. Locks are engraved with line borders and "D. EGG" in front of cocks. European walnut full stocks with knob grips are brass mounted. Trigger guards are of 1770-90 style with acorn finials. Heavy chamfered sideplates are one piece and grip heavy grip knobs have side spurs. Vacant ovals are on tops of grips and hickory ramrods with bone tips mount through single beaded pipes and matching thimbles. Stocks are pinned to barrels. CONDITION: very good. Barrels retaining most of an old rebrown showing some watered pattern to steel. Engraving on tops is slightly softened. Locks show bright polish over light pitting. Stocks with old oil refinish have many marks. Brass is nicely toned. Bores are good with some light pitting. Locks are fine. An attractive pair of British pistols probably dating from the revolutionary war period. (01-21799 (2)/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
