Cal. 60. S# NSN. Made by Joseph Griffin, son of Benjamin these high quality pistols have 10" barrels with cannon turning at breech ends. Tops are engraved "Griffin London". There are London proofs and barrel maker's initials "IG" on left sides of breech ends. Touch holes are not lined. Locks with rounded plates, serpentine cocks, inset pans, bridled friction frizzens and feather springs with dog nose finials have line and small triangle border engraving. "Griffin" is in front of cocks. European walnut stocks extend to muzzles and are pinned to barrels. Mounts are silver and hallmarked for London, Sterling, 1769-70 and "IK" (John King) on trigger guard tangs only. Trigger guards with double beads on bows have relief husk finials, spurred knob grip caps have grotesque faces on bottoms, sideplates are of pierced flowing acanthus form with dogs heads and vacant crest plates have acanthus borders. Stocks are carved with drop points and exceptional relief acanthus around barrel tangs. Greenheart ramrods have horn tips and plain wood tails. CONDITION: Iron and steel parts are toned and aged to a smooth gray brown patina. Silver is pleasantly toned and lightly rubbed. Stocks exhibit an old oil refinish with a few marks. Repairs are noted on both pistols with restored wood at muzzles. Bores are good; lightly pitted. Locks are good. One feather spring is missing its finial. Both pistols are reconverted from percussion to flint. The quality of this work is beyond reproach and nearly undetectable. The most obvious clue being the absence of pitting in pan and barrel flat around touch hole. Further, no flint strikes are evident on frizzens. Close inspection of cocks when removed shows some casting skin. A very presentable pair of pre-revolutionary war pistols by an esteemed maker. Front 2” of stock replaced on one pistol. The other has some replaced wood on right side at muzzle. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27509/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
