EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER GAME GUNS WITH CASE. Cal. 16 Ga., 2 3/4" both. S# 12084/12085 (1909). The 28" dovetailed barrels are engraved "William Powell & Son, 35, Carr's Lane, Birmingham" on narrow game ribs. Rib extensions with scroll engraving are gold inlaid "1" & "2" (matching numbers are on top levers and forend tips). Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 16 Ga. and 1 oz. of shot. S#s are on bottoms of barrels. Case hardened square back sidelock actions feature automatic safetys ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) and single non selective triggers. Actions and locks are engraved with near full coverage, very well cut shaded scroll. Maker's name is on each lockplate. Blued top levers, trigger plates and trigger guards are engraved with matching scroll. S#s are on trigger guard tangs. Well matched straight grip buttstocks of nicely marbled European walnut have different lengths of pull. Gun No. "1" measures 14", Gun No. "2" measures 13 3/4" both over black leather covered pads. Stocks also feature drop points, vacant silver ovals and point pattern checkering on semi diamond hands. Matching splinter ejector forends have Anson releases. CAST: very slightly off. LOP: 13 3/4". WEIGHT: 5 lb. 15 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: guns are housed in what appears to be their original leather two gun case with shaped brass corners. Top is embossed "E.M.Z." and has some steamship labels affixed. Interior is lined in scarlet cloth. A paper William Powell label is in lid along with charge card for these particular guns; indicating a charge of 7/8 oz. shot. Case contains two pair of Powell marked snap caps, a square oil bottle and a striker bottle. A covered compartment with brass knob holds a 16 Ga. broken case extractor and two keys one of which locks case. CONDITION: good to very good as partially refinished. Barrels retaining nearly all of an old reblack, engraving considerably softened. Actions retain traces of original case hardening color where protected, lock plates retain about 40% color. Top levers, trigger plates and trigger guards reblued retaining nearly all that blue; engraving quite soft on trigger guard tang. Stocks retain nearly all of an oil refinish with a fair number of small subsequent marks. Checkering has not been recut and shows wear. Silver ovals dented. Bores are bright and shiny, without noted problems, actions are tight, barrels are on face, ejectors are in time, mechanical triggers appear to work well. Case leather is still relatively light and has many marks and rubs, straps and handles are good. Interior cloth is fine with compressions and some reblocking. Labels are good, lightly foxed, accessories are good. A serviceable pair of light weight small bore British guns. (22-5645 & 22-5646/MGM). CURIO. $9,000-15,000.
