HESSIAN 4-BANDED FLINTLOCK MUSKET. Cal. 78. NSN. Bbl. 43 3/8" w/ no proofs engraved "GENERALITEIT" on top. Rnd. bodied arched lockplate w/ removable rounded pan marked w/ Luxembourg cartouche in front of rnd. bodied serpentine cock that also features bridled friction frizzen & feather spring having bulbous finial w/ teat. Hardwood stock w/ raised carving around lock & sideplates as well as bbl. tang is brass mounted & attaches to bbl. w/ 4 brass bands, 3 w/ retaining springs. Right side of butt is branded "UNITED" "STATES". Rack "No 377" is on escutcheon at top of wrist. Steel ramrod w/ tapered head appears to be original. CONDITION: good. Original flint. Iron parts w/ dark brown patina. Stock w/ old oil refinish. Brass toning back from old polishing. There is evidence of considerable repair to wood on right side. Lock fits reasonably well. Rear lock screw does not engage & is retained by tape. Benjamin Franklin contracted for a number of these muskets to be delivered to the Continental army.
