DATED 1807 WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. The 44 3/4" barrel attaches with three spring retained bands, has "P" eagle head and "V" proofs at rear and is undated. Lock with flat plate having pointed tail is fitted with chamfered cock with straight spur, inset rounded pan, frizzen with straight toe, and feather spring with spear finial. Center of lock is marked "US" eagle and "SPRINGFIELD" in arch. Tail of lock is dated 1807 horizontally. Walnut stock has fluted comb and is iron mounted. Buttplate is dated 1807, trigger guard has rounded ends, sling loops are attached by screws. Brass collection tag stamped "M8" is attached to rear sling loop. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: musket is accompanied by correct style socket bayonet with 15" triangular blade stamped "US". CONDITION: good. Original flint, barrel is mostly smooth brown patina with some light cleaning marks. Lock matches patina well and marks are quite clear. Lock is in original flint configuration. Internal inspection reveals matching assembly marks on all parts including pan. Cock is a possible correct replacement as color does not quite match nor do assembly marks. Frizzen is most certainly a replacement and shows considerable wear and completely different patina. Its replacement screw is artificially aged and has assembly marks matching remainder of lock. Interior of lockplate is stamped with "C" in a star. Stock shows old refinish and illegible inspectors mark behind trigger guard tang. Stock appears sound except for 6" stress crack at bottom in front of trigger guard and a good sized chip at top rear of lockplate. Patina on iron parts matches well except for front band which shows cleaning. A correct style ramrod is present. Bayonet shows considerable cleaning and wear. Bore is good, somewhat pitted. Lock is operable but slip hammered. (01-22768/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
