Cal. 69. S# NSN. The 44-3/4" barrel with bayonet lug on bottom 2" back from muzzle is marked "US" "CT" (contract) under eagle in deep oval cartouche "V" at rear. "V" stamp is also visible on breech plug tang. Flint lock with flat slightly chamfered plate has teat at rear and has an integral rounded pan. Center of lock is stamped with a small eagle over "US" in an oval. Assembly number "3" is on all internal parts except springs and is also found at rear of lockplate and on flat faced cock, but not found on frizzen (frizzen has been re-steeled and barrel revented during period of use). Top jaw is also stamped "3". Walnut stock has "V" over "CW" inspector's mark (Charles Williams) in cartouche on left side panel. Stock is iron mounted with unmarked buttplate and sideplate. Trigger guard has spear finials and sling loop. Barrel is affixed with three spring retained bands. Ramrod with tapered head is present. CONDITION: very good to fine. Metal parts cleaned to pewter gray over considerable dark lightly pitted surfaces. Stock has coating of newer varnish with scuffs and marks. Inspector's marking clogged with this varnish, but appears strong. Stock is sound except for 1-1/2" area missing at top rear of lockplate. Dark relatively smooth bore. Original flint configuration lock is mechanically good. Cock screw replaced (?) with small head screw and washer. This could be a very good 1808 musket with judicious restoration. (01-25579/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
