Cal. 16 Bore. S# 9703 (Circa 1858). The 30" laminated steel barrels are engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS 170. NEW BOND St. LONDON" on broad game rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs and S#. Breeches have platinum blowouts. Breech iron is nicely scroll engraved and stock has silver flash guards. Front spring island type locks with tall flat faced serpentine hammers are engraved with well cut open scroll. 'WESTLEY RICHARDS" is on each lockplate. Trigger plate has pineapple finial and steel trigger guard is fitted with grip safety device which locks triggers until squeezed. Straight grip stock of fiddle figured and lightly streaked European walnut measures 14-3/8" over steel buttplate with long scroll engraved top tang. Stock attaches to barrels with single side bolt through oval silver escutcheons and has point pattern checkering at grip and forend. A vacant silver oval is on toeline. Original walnut ramrod with horn tip and brass tail mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple type thimble. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .669. R .669. Restriction: L .000. R .000. Wall thickness: L .037. R .033. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/4". DAC: 1-5/8". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-3/8". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 4 oz. CONDITION: very good. Barrels retaining about 40% original brown. About 30% case hardening color remains on locks. There are traces of blue on trigger guard and buttplate tang. Stocks show considerable wear to their original surfaces with many scattered marks. Bores are exceptional; smooth, bright and shiny. Locks are crisp. Consignor states that this was Lynton MacKenzie's favorite shotgun. Lynton was possibly the most gifted engraver of our time and had a genuine love of muzzleloaders; especially flintlocks. He died in 1999 at the age of 59.
