Cal. 22 LR. S# GW11296. Bbl. 5 1/2" w/ blade front sight & corresponding frame notched rear. Mfg. 1954-1964 w/ very notable production history initiated by Colt ceasing to produce its SAA in 1940. Void of SAA revolvers was filled by Ruger & Great Western Arms along w/ some foreign imports. Immense popularity of TV Westerns contributed to consumer demand for SAAs. GWA produced almost exact copies of popular Colt w/ main difference being firing pin in frame rather than on hammer. Most like this one had simulated stag grips that were also popular in Westerns. Various bbl. lengths plus usually blued w/ case colored frames & loading gates like this example. GWA products used in most Westerns & in once popular sport of fast draw competition; also popularized by Westerns. So popular were GWAs that they were even offered in kit form. Deluxe engraved versions & nickel plating w/ special grips were also available. John Wayne was notable owner & user of GWA revs. as were stars of many Westerns. Noticeably hefty revolver because of its sm. cal. & standard size. CONDITION: good to very good general appearance w/ holster like high point wear, slight cyl. turn line & very little finish on outside curve of ejector housing. Rich deep case colors on frame & loading gate. Very good to excellent grips & near excellent bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Alan Bradley Shepherd. (21-3434/NW). CURIO. $700-1,000.
