HEADLINE OF CUSTER'S MASSACRE. Custer was killed June 26, 1876, but news didn't reach the newspapers til first mention on July 6. Interesting one July 5, 1876 paper, the New York World has headlines "Gold in the Black Hills, Custer Scalps the Indian Commissioner". A July 4 article in Chicago Daily Tribune has long story about Sitting Bull. The newspapers continue to run news as more details were released as to the casualties into August, interviews with Indians, funerals, etc. The earlier papers tell what is going on in the Indian lands, and even about Custer's exploits before his demise. Papers are from all over the US, Washington; NY; Cheyene, WY; Springfield, Mass; Evansville, IN; St. Louis; Wilkes Berre, PA; Portland, OR; Grass Valley, CA; Philadelphia; Columbus, OH; Chicago; & Boston. A few additional Custer items in lot include #14 of 100 LE "Death of Custer" by unknown artist, limited edition 1975 Curtis map of Little Big Horn. CONDITION: fair to good. PROVENANCE: Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection. (02-21420/JS). $200-400.
