VT. Cal. 38. S# 116 (on muzzle). This well made percussion rifle has 30 1/8" octagon bbl. fitted w/ U-notch elevation adj. spring type rear sight & sm. steel bead front. Rear of top flat is stamped “P. STORY” “WINDSOR VT.” (Paschall Story, working 1830-45). Serial number is stamped on muzzle. Backspring percussion lock is also marked w/ maker’s name & address & some stamped in scroll engraving. Walnut 1/2 stock w/ pewter cap & faceted right hand cheekpiece is iron mounted. Trigger guard has loop at rear forming grip. Crescent buttplate has short return. Island type patchbox on right side of stock has fancy shaped outline. All of these fittings have some scroll & leaf engraving. A German silver oval is inlet on face of cheekpiece & bbl. attaches to stock w/ sidebolt through shaped rectangular German silver escutcheons. Hickory ramrod mounts through three plain iron pipes. CONDITION: good. All metal parts exhibit attractive gray to brown uncleaned patina. Stock has old oil refinish w/ many subsequent light marks. Bore is good w/ some scattered pitting. Lock is good. (01-21156/MGM). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
