Cal. 69. S# NSN. The 42" barrel with bayonet lug on top is marked "V" "P" & eagle head at rear. Flint lock with beveled flat plate has rounded tail. Lock features rounded cock, inset brass pan, frizzen with straight toe and feather spring with bulbous finial. A heraldic eagle over "US" is at center and tail is marked "HARPERS" "FERRY" "1828" at rear. Walnut stock attaches to barrel with three spring retained bands and is iron mounted. Buttplate screws are stamped "16" with no number found on the plate itself (matching number on inside of lock on pan). Trigger guard with sling loop on bow is stamped "6" which also appears on rear and mid bands. Stock has typical low comb and is stamped with "AB" inspector's mark along with "V" & "PH" on left side panel. Left side of stock near muzzle is deeply stamped with conjoined "HL" & "AL". CONDITION: good original flint. Metal parts exhibit dark brown patina with some cleaning over some fairly deep pitting on side plate. Wood has old oil refinish over many marks and bumps. Inspector's marks difficult to read. Stock shows cracks in front of lockplate and missing wood at top rear. Bore is lightly pitted. Lock is mechanically good. (01-25588/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,300-2,000.
