BARREL PERCUSSION RIFLE. Cal. 6 Bore (915 groove diameter. Multi-groove rifling). S# 2991. The Purdey records indicate that this rifle was built as an 8 bore with 33" barrel, sold on 13 July 1837. It presently has 26" octagon barrel of twist steel with under rib and measures as a 6 bore. Top flat is newly re-engraved with maker's name and address. Bottom of barrel is stamped with London black powder proof, "J.P." & S#. Rifle is sighted with single standing leaf "u" notch rear and front white bead. Scroll engraved breech iron has tigers face on top. Front spring lock with back sliding safety is fitted with flat face serpentine hammer. Lock is engraved "Purdey" and with some scroll. Trigger plate with set trigger has shell motif pineapple finial. Trigger guard with tiger on bow has spur forming pistol grip. S# is behind grip. Iron butt plate with long top tang is scroll engraved. Patchbox on left side of butt is engraved with tiger laying under palm trees on spring loaded cover. Newly made stock is of ebonized walnut and features shadow line right hand cheekpiece and checkering at grip and forend. A large ebony ramrod with brass tail (worm under cap) mounts through single plain pipe and iron thimble. CONDITION: good as restored. Barrel retaining nearly all of a good re-brown with fine pattern definition. Other metal parts show light pitting, cleaning to gray brown and some re-engraving especially lock which also shows considerable work. Bore is good with strong rifling, lightly pitted throughout. Lock is operable as is set trigger. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26131/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,800-4,000.
