DEATH" FLINTLOCK RIFLE & PISTOL. William Buchele, 1895-1977, was a renowned builder of contemporary flintlock & percussion rifles & pistols in the 1960's -1970's. He is known as a co-author of the book "Recreating the American Long Rifle" with George Shumway and Peter Alexander. 1). FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. Cal. 45. NSN. Bbl. 42" octagon with rifled bore measuring 7/8" across the flats at the muzzle. German silver blade front sight with fixed U-notch rear sight. Top flat is engraved "W. Buchele". Iron lockplate is also engraved with builder's name "Buchele". Curled plain iron trigger has pierced rear web. Full length wedge fastened stock of fancy flame grained maple. Double line moulded cheekpiece is surrounded by deep relief carving featuring a bust of Andrew Jackson between the cheekpiece and buttplate. Additional deep relief carving is found around the lockplate, top tang, and sideplate areas. Incise carved moulding is found along the toeline. Ramrod channel of forearm has full length relief carved moulding. Pierced brass sideplate features a rearing stallion with floral and scroll engraving surrounding a banner inscribed "LIBERTY OR DEATH". Cheekpiece of stock has bright finished Great Seal of the United States featuring the American eagle and shield partially surrounded by stars. Andrew Jackson's bust is highlighted by bright finished crossed flintlock rifle inlays. Additional wire inlay and brass flowers are found on the cheekpiece and along the full length of both sides of the forearm highlighting the wedge escutcheons. Top of wrist has a bright finished oval escutcheon with borderline engraving. Right side of stock features a rectangular lid pierced and segmented brass patchbox with floral hand engraving. Additional brass fittings include crescent buttplate, engraved toe plate, finger curl trigger guard, nose cap, and pierced & engraved faceted thimble. Hardwood ramrod is held by 2 faceted brass pipes. 2) FLINTLOCK PISTOL. Cal. 45. NSN. Bbl. 9 7/8" octagon with rifled bore measuring 13/16" across flats at muzzle. Semi-circular German silver front sight with fixed U-notch rear sight. Top flat is engraved "W. Buchele". Engraved lockplate with engraved hammer is marked "MASILN WARRANTED". Plain iron trigger. Round butt stock of fancy flame grained maple with moulded edges around lockplate, sideplate, and ramrod areas. Brass nose cap. Brass pierced sideplate features a rearing stallion with floral engraving surrounding a banner inscribed "LIBERTY OR DEATH". Brass butt cap has deep relief carved American eagle. Brass trigger guard and thimble have relief foliate carving. Bright finished fitting include an oval wrist plate and 2 sets of pin escutcheons on forearm. Additional ornamentation consists of wire inlays with bright finished leaves and brass flowers on butt and forearm areas of the stock. Hardwood ramrod is held by faceted brass pipes. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: handmade leather possibles bag and powder horn. Possibles bag measures 11 3/4X9 3/4" hand stitched bag of stressed leather with antique appearance has a red cloth panel in front of lid and string tassels. Leather strap with brass buckles. Powder horn measures 13" around the outside from wooden butt plug to spot with walnut cap. Forward 5" of horn have faceted hand carving with 2 3/4" section of twist pattern carving. Balance of horn has floral and geometric scrimshaw ornamentation. CONDITION: Both remain in fine condition retaining most wood & metal finish. Sound locks.
