NAMBU SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH HOLSTER. Cal. 8mm Nambu. S# 171. Bbl. 4 5/8". Series I Type 14 Nambu semi-automatic pistol mfg. at the Kokubunji factory under Nagoya supervision in October of 1941. Left side of the frame exhibits Kanji characters at the safety lever, followed by additional Kanji denoting the model designation, with the Nagoya/Kokubunji arsenal insignia, encircled series symbol, and 3-digit S# "171", above the Showa date code "16.10" marked on the right. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the trigger, mag. release button, and firing pin extension, which are strawed. Interior of frame is properly polished in-the-white, with the bolt, locking block, and firing pin also being polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved wood grips. Standard dovetailed blade front sight and integral notch rear sight on frame. Grooved cocking knob with enlarged pattern trigger guard. Nearly all serialized parts are matching and include the frame, mag. safety, trigger guard, trigger, mag. release button, bbl. / bbl. extension, bolt, as well as the locking block. Interior of left grip panel is matching via a handwritten "171" in pencil. Cocking knob is mismatched via "375", with remaining parts being unnumbered. MAGS: x1 non-matching (S#: 265) plated 8-rd. with aluminum plug. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: brown leather clamshell holster with riveted brass "keyhole" closure flap strap and 2 square brass shoulder strap rings. CONDITION: metal components retain bountiful amounts of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some scattered spots of light wear and thinning, some spots of light surface oxidation and pitting, as well as 2 typical lines of silvering on the left side of the frame from operation of the safety lever. Cocking piece shows scattered spots and patches of darkened light surface oxidation. Strawed parts retain good amounts of their original finish, exhibiting wear fading to a dark gray patina in contact areas. Very bright bore, exhibiting consistent light pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show scattered marks and small impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sound. Holster remains malleable, exhibiting scattered superficial marks from handling and storage, with heavy age related cracking and several tears present at the toe. Leather panel on underside of toe is absent. Spare firing pin pouch is torn, with approx. 3/4 of the leather being absent. Brass fittings have acquired a mellow patina. It is important to note that changes in Type 14 production were implemented in October of 1941, the exact year and month this pistol was produced, which included less attention to the machining and the polishing on metal components, with this example being among the first pistols produced after the aforementioned production changes. A seldom presented opportunity for one to acquire a high condition example of a 3-digit Kokubunji Series I Type 14 Nambu. (26-1577/MLW). CURIO. $800-1,400.
