RIFLE OWNED BY JOHN SHERWIN JR. WITH SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# 695 (1927). While most Griffin & Howe Springfield's retain the military (usually star gauge) barrels the person that ordered this rifle spent the extra money to order its 21" Poldi-Anticorro steel barrel with integral two step top rib. Rib is fitted with three folding leaf express rear sight and special made high front ramp with knurled sight protector covering gold bead. Top of rib is engraved "No. 695 GRIFFIN & HOWE inc. NEW YORK" in milled out portion of matting. Steel information with logo and caliber are on left rear of barrel. A sling eye is partially banded on. 1903 Springfield action has matted receiver ring and is fitted with Lyman 48 receiver sight and G&H single lever scope base. Bolt body and extractor are Damascened. Bolt knob is checkered in two panels. Rear action tang is slimmed and shaped. Standard bottom metal has been case hardened and had trigger guard bow considerably slimmed at front. A checkered panel is at front of floorplate. Trigger has been converted to single stage. Classic G&H stock without cheekpiece measures 13-7/8" over checkered and engraved steel trap buttplate. Trap contains a spare extractor, firing pin tip and ejector. Stock also features classic G&H checkering, horn forend tip, horn grip cap and sling stud. A silver oval on toeline is engraved "John Sherwin Jr." (Reportedly a member of the famous paint producing family of Cleveland, OH.) Rifle is fitted with Leopold Vari-X III 2.5x8 scope with duplex reticle in custom made G&H type rings and slide. MEASUREMENTS: WEIGHT: 7 lb. 14 oz. without scope. CONDITION: very fine. Barrel and action retaining over 95% original blue. Bottom metal retaining nearly 70% original case hardening color. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with some minor scratches and marks. Checkering shows wear. Bore is very fine, sharp and shiny throughout. Mechanically fine. Scope is also very fine with a few minor marks. Optically clear. (25-2469/MGM). CURIO. $6,000-10,000.
