TRAPDOOR RIFLE WITH BAYONET. Cal. 45-70. S# 465581. Standard configuration w/ 32 5/8" blued bbl. w/ Buffington rear (Marked "R") & steel blade front sights. Rear of bbl. is stamped w/ "V", "P", & eagle head proofs with inspector's marks "P" & "A". Case hardened breech block is dated "1873". Action tang is also case hardened. Blued lock is stamped w/ eagle & "US SPRINGFIELD". Walnut stock w/ steel muzzle cap attaches by two spring retained bands. Buttplate is stamped "US" & trigger guard is two piece. Stock is stamped w/ "SWP" "1889" inspector's marking on left side & w/ "P" behind trigger guard tang. Correct ramrod is present. Rifle comes w/ "US" marked socket bayonet w/ 18" triangular blade. CONDITION: very fine. Bbl. retaining over 90% original blue w/ some freckling & a bit of muzzle wear. Breechblock retains over 85% of its case hardening color as does bbl. tang. Lock retains about 80% original blue w/ loss due to flaking at tail & toward breech block latch. Stock retains nearly all of its oil finish w/ a fair number of light marks & a few relatively heavy. Inspector's marks are sharp. Buttplate retains about half of its blue. Trigger guard has nearly all of its original blue. Bore is bright & shiny. Bayonet is very good, retaining about half its original blue. (01-20993/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
