CARBINE. Cal. 50 RF. NSN. Bbl. 21 1/2" round with semi circular front sight and folding leaf rear sight. Lever operated case colored action with right side hammer and left side mounted saddle ring and bar. Left side is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO. / WINDSOR, VT. / U.S. / BALLS PATENT, / JUNE 23, 1863 / MAR. 25, 1864". Band fastened 3/4 length walnut forearm with button tip iron cleaning rod. Straight grip walnut stock has case colored steel carbine buttplate. Left ear has a sharp cartouche. Top of comb has a short straight line mark that may be "I" or "1". Peak of buttplate, trigger guard tang, saddle ring bar and barrel bands have inspectors mark "S". Ordered in 1864, delivery of 1,002 carbines was made in May of 1865. Even though delivery was too late for actual service, it is generally considered as a Civil War firearm. CONDITION: barrel retains over 80% dull lightly faded blue showing small areas of finish loss and spots of darkening. Receiver retains over 80% lightly faded case colors showing fading and small dark spots. Very good original wood finish with scattered small dents, scratches and marks. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. (01-21150/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,000.
